Boiler Room Fraud

This type of fraud is targeted at legitimate investors including companies and individuals. It is widely characterised by large scale and high pressure sales of investment opportunities to members of the public.

Victims are usually targeted through a cold call and offered the opportunity to invest in shares or other commodities with the promise of high returns which are then not forthcoming. The opportunities which the victims invest in are usually heavily overpriced or worthless and in the most serious cases, they do not even exist. Individuals can be recruited into the employment of such boiler rooms without the knowledge that the products being offered are worthless and could in due course find themselves accused of fraud. Those who produce sales literature on behalf of such companies can also find themselves under the spotlight. Similarly, the investigating authorities may wrongly target a completely legitimate sales enterprise based upon a complete misunderstanding of the products being offered.
